16 out of 32 seeded players perished in their opening sortie of the
New Year as new faces take their places in the line up at the venue in
February.
Highlight of the day was a 140 total clearance from Preston's Ian McCulloch
as he breezed past Sean Storey 5-0. McCulloch also added
breaks of 97, 53, and 54 for good measure. He will now play Peter Ebdon in Scotland.
Willie Thorne turned back the clock, notched yet another century - 106
as he won 5-1 against Colm Gilcreest. Thorne has set up a match
against Andy Hicks, another player who has struggled to find his form
this season so far.
Swansea's Tony Chappel clawed his way back from the brink of defeat at
0-4, but having gallantly levelled at 4-4 he could not sustain his
recovery as a grateful Stuart Pettman won the final frame 106-0 to go
forward to meet Billy Snaddon on his home turf. Joe Swail's win sets
up an all Irish battle as he plays Ken Doherty.
Quinten Hann's solid 5-3 win over Martin Dziewialtowski now matches
him against Mark King in an intruiging encounter.
Jonathan Birch posted the
highest
break of the event so far - 125 on his way to a 5-2 win over
Jason Weston - and the
mouthwatering draw against last year's champion
Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Matt Wilson joins the ton club, as
his 103 helps him to a shock win over Pakistan's Lancastrian
Shokat Ali.
Veteran Dennis Taylor, in his
final professional season, bids farewell to the British Open as he bows out 5-3 to Worcester's
Dave Finbow. Runs of 58 and 69
helped Finbow an a 4-0 lead, before the obdurate Taylor won 3 frames to cut the deficit, before
Finbow edged the next for his win.

Craig MacGillivray.

Hong Kong's Marco Fu opened the
second half of the season in bright enough style today in Blackpool. Pitted against former
English Amateur Champion,
Stuart Bingham, both players
produced a match of high quality and solid scoring, but having fallen 3-2 behind, it was Fu who
stepped up another gear to run in frame and match winning breaks of 67, 63 and 95 to go forward.

Thailand's Pahitoon Phonbun survived a thriller to progress at the
hands of giant killer Joe Delaney,
having clinched a 30 minute decider. Phonbun produced breaks of 85 and 93.
The other four overseas qualifiers only put two frames on the board between them, once again
calling into question the current system for overseas qualifying - Aussie
Shawn Budd managed the two frames
against Adrian Gunnell, but
Richard Somauroo,
Mario Geudens and
Tom Finstad all failed to trouble
the scores.
Robin Hull of Finland clattered in
breaks of 82, 66 and 52 in frames 1-3 of his demolition of
Mario Geudens.

Disappointment today for the Newsgroup's own pro Simon Parker, as he
loses out in a tantilising deciding frame to Stuart Pettman, his
fellow Lancastrian. Pettmann opened the match with a run of 101, added
51 in the second and 57 in frame 7, but it was a match clinching 74
that saw him over the line in the decider.
Wales' Ian Sargeant threw away a 4-0 lead to give Karl Burrows a 5-4
win; while his countryman Mark Bennett also lost the clincher, as
outsider Joe Delaney compiled a vital 52 in the decider.
Alfie Burden showed scant respect for his opponent's illustrious past,
as he breezed past Tony Knowles 5-1. Knowles opened with a run of 60,
but Burden responded with 5 frame on the spin and breaks of 105 and
66.
Canadian Bob Chaperon gave Scotland's latest hero Marcus Campbell
plenty to think about. Chaperon nicked frame two with a break of 70,
in response to a run of 69 from Campbell. "Frechnie" added a run of 81
in the 4th to keep the scores level and took a 3-2 lead, before
Campbell dug deep to run out the match in some close fought and long
frames.
Shock of the day was the early demise of Matthew Couch, who lost the
final frame of his match with Finland's Robin Hull. A quality game saw
breaks of 56, 59, and 54 from Couch, but Hull responded with 80, 62
and decisively 56 in the final frame.
Worcester's Dave Finbow administered heavy punishment to young
Scottish hopeful Alan Burnett, runs of 52 and 67 getting him off to
the ideal start, as he ran out an easy 5-0 winner.
Snooker's "rap" boy Lee Richardson went on a scoring spree in a 5-1
demolition of Nick Terry. Lee hammered home breaks of 83, 94, 122 and
64, and Terry compiled 121 in the only frame he won.
Wayne Brown wasn't far behind in the scoring stakes as he put away
scores of 66, 77, 98 and 80 in a 5-1 win over Neath's Steve Newbury.
The lowest 6 seeded winning players from this round go forward to play
the 6 overseas qualifiers in round 4. The winners go through in the
seeded players place in the draw.

The Old Brigade show the kids a thing or two today:
Tony Knowles and Steve Newbury struck a blow for the Over 40s as they
both stormed to welcome victories in the second round of the
Scottish Open at Blackpool.
43 year old Knowles knocked in two centuries - 113 and 123 on his way
to a 5-2 win over Australia's young hopeful Johl Younger. This has set
up a mouth-watering match against Alfie Burden on Wednesday. Steve
Newbury, who endured a miserable early season in Plymouth bounced back
with a 5-1 drubbing of Leigh Robinson. WPBSA Coach Newbury is part of
a snooker dynasty back in Neath, which includes his father, 16 year
old son Paul and sister Sian, who has been a Welsh International for
more than ten years.
Elsewhere 14 of the seeds failed to negotiate their opening matches
today as the giant killers rolled them over. Plymouth's 147 hero
Adrian Gunnell edged out Paul Sweeny in a last frame thriller. Sweeny
knocked in breaks of 68, 62 & 63 but Gunnell stepped in with 81 and
the match winning 89 in the decider.
Ireland's Colm Gilcreest put paid to Welshman Mark Fenton, helped by
runs of 53 and 68, which negated offerings of 67 and 81 from Fenton.
Gilcreest held a 3-0 lead before Fenton levelled, but he couldn't
sustain his recovery as Gilcreest took the next two frames for his 5-3
victory.
The tons started roling in today, led by Tony Knowles with 123 and
113, Malta's favourite Joe Grech added 121 in a 5-2 win over Mario Wehrmann, while 100 helped Nigel Gilbert to his 5-4 victory against
Sean Lanigan. Nick Terry saved his 103 for the match winning break
against Gary Lees and Chris Shade contributed 122 in a 5-2 win over
David McDonnell.
There were more good wins for the overseas contingent, led by veteran
Canadian Bob Chaperon, who notched a 5-2 win over Munraj Pal, while
The flying Finn Robin Hull progressed 5-3 against Robert Milkins, with
breaks of 83 and 59.
Thailand's Tai Pichit ran in breaks of 85, 75 and 69 in a 5-2 win over
Jason Wallace.

Morning session
The first round hopefuls set out on the long road to the Granite
City - Aberdeen - their starting point first round matches in
Blackpool this morning.
Four players failed to even make it to the starting line - as
Li Jian-Bing, Anan Terananon, Dylan Leary and Kirk Stevens all failed to
show for their matches. The lucky beneficiaries were England's
Les Dodd, Wales' Ian Sargeant, Canada's Bob Chaperon and England's Wayne Saidler.
Mixed fortunes for the Overseas players - Robin Hull of Finland posted
the first whitewash of the morning, a break of 63 his only sizeable
contribution in beating Matthew Bray 5-0.
Australia lost two players as Steve Mifsud lost 5-3 to Stuart Reardon
of England and Neil Robertson didn't trouble the scorers as Scotland's
Geoff Dunn won 5-0. Reardon notched up runs of 61 and 83 in his win,
while Dunn recorded back to back breaks of 54 and 65.
Australia's youngest player, Johl Younger kept the flag flying with a
5-3 win over Surinder Gill. Gill's break of 61 in the second frame was
the only notable break as he held a 2-0 lead before Younger found his
form. Younger's win has earned him an intriguing encounter against the
veteran Tony Knowles in Round Two.
Canada recorded one walkover, one loss and one no show, as
Bob Chaperon's opponent Dylan Leary was scratched; Gary Natale lost out
5-3 to England's Paul Cavney and Kirk Stevens failed to report for his
opening match.
Iceland beat Belgium comfortably as Kristjan Helgason picked up where
he left off in Plymouth last summer, recording a 5-1 victory over
Bjorn Haneveer. Haneveer notched 73 in the second, but runs of 71 in
the third, and 59 and 54 in the fifth and sixth saw Helgason safely
over the line.
Evening session
Six more "no-shows" tonight, but Global Snooker Centre's own pro
Simon Parker, recovers from a 2-0 deficit to beat China's Guo Hua 5-2.
Malaysia's Sam Chong shows his class with a 5-1 hammering of John Giles.
Colm Gilcreest wins an all-Irish battle against Dermot McGlinchey.
Runs of 71 and 67 in Frames 5 & 6 sealing his victory.
Snooker's youngest pro Shaun Murphy loses out in a decider to Eddie Barker.
Belgium's Patrick Delsemme notches a win for the Continent as he
sneaks a decider against Mark Miller. Another continental win - for
Mario Wehrmann against Mike Hallett, a run of 82 the highlight for
Wehrmann, who now faces Malta's Joe Grech.
Thailand's former monk Tai Pichit breezes through 5-0, his victim
Darren Limburg. Pichit will now play Plymouth's hero Patrick Wallace
of Northern Ireland. Wallace's exploits last summer saw him through to
two venues and he notched a memorable win against Nigel Bond in the UK
Championship.
