Jimmy White cleared up in the final frame with the tournament's
highest break of 141 as he stormed to a 5-1 victory over Mark
Flowerdew. The Whirlwind looked in unstoppable form and now he meets
Steve James tonight (Tuesday).
Ken Doherty made the quickest win in the tournament so far with a 5-0
win over Jason Prince in just 78 minutes.
Steve Newbury won the first frame against Ronnie O'Sullivan, but after
that Ronnie was never in any trouble. The highlight was a break of 99
in the fifth frame that took just four and a half minute to complete.
"I've had ten days off and fell refreshed," he said. "I felt good in
myself and when I'm like that I like to entertain a bit."
Willie Thorne's chances of staying in the top 16 were virtually ended
when he crashed out 5-2 in the first round to Chris Small. Thorne has
only won one match all year and now needs to beat Tai Pichit in the
first round of the World Championships to keep his place in the top
32.
Former world champion Dennis Taylor clung onto his place among the
game's elite with a nail-biting win over Mark Johnston-Allen. The
Irishman came from 3-0 and 4-2 down to 5-4 and should now stay in the
top 32 for next season.
"I have said that I would have to think about my future in
competetive snooker if I drop out of the 32. It would mean playing in
all the qualifying rounds at Blackpool in front of 15 people and
surrounded by three grey walls," he said.

Stephen Hendry posted two massive breaks on his way to the last 16 of
the British Open. He compiled a 145 and a 142 beating fellow Scot Drew
Henry 5-3 and only missed out on a 147 in the opening frame when he
had to take a blue efter the eighth red.
"I'm hitting the balls well but I'm only just building up to a peak
for the World Championships," Hendry said confidently.
Steve Davis came from behind to survive a tense second round match
against Tony Knowles. Davis was 3-1 down at one stage and would have
been 4-1 down had Knowles not gone in off the final pink. Then Knowles
relinquished a 63-0 lead in the sixth by giving away 16 points on the
colours. Davis also took frame seven, then Knowles levelled with a
break of 135 before Davis won the deciding frame rather easily.
Alan McManus became the first top eight seed to bow out of the
tournament as he lost 5-1 to Dave Harold. He lost frame three by
default after being called for three successive misses and Harold then
reeled off breaks of 67, 58 and 73.
"I had a terrible run with the balls. It happened in every frame and
I don't know why," McManus said afterwards.
Mick Price and Chris Small set a new record of 72 mins 16 secs for the
longest TV frame in a ranking event. The longest ever frame in a
professional event is 92 mins 59 secs, set by Cliff Thorburn and
Stephen O'Connor last year.
