The new World Champion is Thailands Sakchai Sim-Ngam who defeated Englands David Lilley in the final 11-7.

On his road to the final Sim-Ngam beat Hitesh Naran (South Africa), Timothy English (Wales) and David Gray (England). Lilley defeated Gordon Bain (Scotland), Thomas Hong (Singapore) and Praprut Chaitanasakun aka Rom Surin (Thailand). Chaitanasakun went on to claim third place.

Mohammed Yusuf (Pakistan), the 1994 champion, went out in the last 16. He was beaten by Timothy English (Wales). World Under 21 champion, Alan Burnett (Scotland), was the quarter-final victim of Chaitanasakun.

There were 51 (!) century breaks and 16 over-120 breaks. Highest being 143 by Sam Chong. So the standards where pretty high.

All in all there were a record 87 players taking part in the championship. They came from 42 different countries from all five continents.

Risto Väyrynen (Finland), who provided the results, also participated. He didn't qualify for the last 16 cause he came third in his group with 8 wins out of 10 matches. He was dropped out by Alok Kumar (India) who also had 8 wins but better frame difference, just by two frames. He had to win his last match 4-1 to qualify but won it 4-3 ... Next time, Risto. Next time!
